Chihuahua Training

Do you have a Chihuahua that needs some training help? Natalie from Crazy Kind Calm dog training can help!

With over 900 dogs trained across the Macedon Ranges, Natalie understands the unique personality and needs that come with this wonderful breed.

Chihuahuas are tiny dogs with enormous attitudes. They're fiercely loyal to their chosen person, full of sass, and surprisingly brave — but their small size and big personality can create behavioural patterns that are easily reinforced without realising.

Common Chihuahua traits and training needs

  • Can develop fear-based aggression — barking, lunging, and snapping at perceived threats
  • Prone to resource guarding of their owner, favourite spots, and food
  • Often reactive to other dogs, particularly larger ones, due to fear or defensiveness
  • Can be difficult to toilet train, especially in cold or wet weather
  • Trembling and anxiety are common, especially in new or overwhelming situations
  • Barking at everything from the safety of their owner's arms or the couch

Chihuahua owners know their tiny dog runs the show. If your Chihuahua barks at every dog in sight, guards you like a dragon guards treasure, or refuses to walk in the rain, these are incredibly common patterns. Their small size means problem behaviours often get accidentally rewarded — picking them up when they bark, letting them skip walks. With consistent training, even the sassiest Chihuahua can learn to navigate the world with more confidence.

"Nat was excellent. I felt she understood my puppy and me immediately. She is clearly very knowledgeable and left me with a very different approach to helping my anxious boy. She was kind towards both my puppy and me and I was confident she understood and cared about dogs - I have had different experiences with other trainers. After our session and the follow up email I have a lot of different tools to use to work with my boy. I would recommend her to anyone looking for help giving a dog its best life. Thanks Nat."
