English Staffordshire Terriers (Staffies) are loyal, affectionate dogs with hearts of gold. Often called the "nanny dog," they adore people and want nothing more than to be close to their family — but their strength and terrier determination need proper direction.

Common English Staffordshire Terrier traits and training needs

• Strong and powerful — can pull hard on lead and are difficult to physically manage without training
• Can be reactive to other dogs, especially on lead, despite being friendly off lead
• High pain tolerance means they may not show stress in typical ways
• Exuberant greeters — jumping and full-body wriggling that can knock people over
• Mouthy during play and when excited, which can alarm visitors
• Prone to frustration-based barking and pulling when they can't access something they want
